Dash and Lily

Dash and Lily is a short series that just premiered on Netflix.

Disaffected Dash is still reeling from a romantic break up and not in a Christmas spirit. He cannot tap into the energy of joy, happiness an peace of the season. Lily loves the Christmas season and all it entails.

It’s a Christmas series, so I don’t think it is surprising that in the first episode these inner worlds start to interact in co-incidental ways.

There are mild spoilers ahead.

Lily in the series is supposed to be a 17 year old girl. Dash’s age is not stated yet. He still lives with his divorced mother, and attends school. He seems to come from a wealthy family that enjoys travel. Apparently his parents do not talk, at all. His mother sends him to New York to spend with his father for Christmas, and he tells his father he is with his mother for Christmas. This allows him to spend Christmas by himself in New York city. He is able to stay at a friends apartment when the friend is out of town also.

I found it slightly disturbing how casually a person embraces misleading his parents and arranging a place in the city. It seemed very familiar. Also, as soon as he got in, he poured himself a practiced drink. It looked very natural. This is probably establishing his character and the ennui he is experiencing.

Looking for distraction he finds a mysterious book at the local book store that starts a scavenger hunt that reignites his interest.

It’s an interesting premise and it was a fun enough show I will watch another episode.

It reminds me how much a little outreach can change someones energy so quickly. Helping someone reconnect, renew, and re-energize is so essential. Especially after the year of isolation we have.

Going into the holiday season, what can we do to help people reconnect? Smile, hold the door, help someone unexpectedly. Perhaps just leaving a cheerful note in a public space may be just what someone needs to see.

Maybe we can each be the star that shines brightly in the night.
